September 30
We thank you, O God! We give thanks because you are near. People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds. God says, “At the time I have planned, I will bring justice against the wicked. When the earth quakes and its people live in turmoil, I am the one who keeps its foundations firm.
Psalm 75:1-3
Hi.
Last week we looked at dramatic things like earthquakes and volcanoes. But such “exciting” processes are not the only things that shape the landscape. So do less spectacular, long-term processes like the effects of the weather. Weathering refers to the effect of heating, cooling, precipitation, and other weather effects. Related to weathering can be mass movement – major events like landslides, but also less intense things like the gradual downslope movement of saturated soil.
This week Lab 3 is due … then you have a breather on the labs. However your midterm is coming on October 18. If you would like to study/work with others, you can find contacts on Canvas.
This week, Monday is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools for First Nations, children who never returned home, residential school survivors, as well as their families and communities. First Nations in Canada have a rich history of understanding the physical environment, working well with the natural world, and caring for the environment. We can all learn much from their understandings.
This week, please:
- Read online notes 14 and the text Chapter 14
- Lab 3 is due Wednesday, October 2 (Monday is a holiday, so you get an extra day). This is a Quiz on Canvas. You can take as much time as you like; it is open book; but you do have to do it all in one sitting. Allow about 2-3 hours for it. You will need a ruler.
- Record last week’s readings of Chapter 13 on Canvas by Tuesday
- Make a good comment in the discussion forum on Canvas by Saturday midnight. These are pretty easy marks, so please take advantage of them. And it is a great way to get to know your classmates.
- Your midterm exam is Wednesday, October 18, 1-2 p.m. on Canvas. A study guide is here
